Another phenomenon of the 15th century art world was the increasing prominence of the portrait.

Whereas before mainly religious scenes were the order of the day, more and more people and notable figures were being immortalised in quality portraits.

The influence on this is said by some to be the Roman coins that were studied at the time.

The pictures tend to be in profile, and hence only head and shoulders would normally be in the picture. This also allowed imperfections to be hidden in the subject!
