Pentimenti is a term that you might hear bandied about in the art world, but like most terms it is far from obvious what it means.
Well, it is related to painting in oil.
One of the good things about using oils is that the oil dries slowly, and therefore errors could be corrected by the painter as they went along.
Sometimes with age the oil goes a bit transparent, and this enables the corrections to become visible - and this is what is known as pentimenti - the corrections that were made to oil paintings.
