Throughout different periods of painting history, many objects are often placed in artworks to confer ideas of the day, and the current trends in thinking and philosophy.
You will notice in much artwork of around the 16th century, particularly German, that many portraits will have a skull somewhere in the picture - whether on a table or in a background.
This is there simply to signify and remind the viewer of the transience of life.
In general always look at the objects in a portrait and think why they are there. Whilst some are merely painted because they were actually in the room, a great many are symbolic. It is not unknown for all the objects to be symbols of one thing or another; some obvious some much more obscure!
