How To Trace Your Family Tree

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The internet is a great resource for tracing your family tree, as are all the books in the library.

However I have found that many people don't start with the most obvious source - and that is family members.

The first step should always be to get in touch with all your relatives who are still alive, and to have a chat with them about family members.

If you do this through writing letters due to distance, then try to be very specific with your questions for best response - for instance ask for names and where people lived rather than just something hazier like 'can you remember your grandparents?'

The more facts you get, the more clues you have to follow up in the next step, which is trying to trace those family members who are outside of the memory of the family members currently living.
