Drift A Car

Car drifting has become a very popular sport among most car enthusiasts today. It has become so popular that car drifting exhibitions and competitions are now being held all over the world. There are even drifting games that have been introduced to the internet, mobile devices and game consoles.

The drifting technique had its beginnings in Japan in the 1970s. Credit for this major breakthrough in sport goes to Kunimitsu Takahashi, a legend in the motorcycling sport. Meanwhile, Keiichi Tsuchiya became the first Japanese to practice the drifting skills which were even captured on video and inspired race car drivers. Since then, drifting has been featured in numerous sports magazines, TV shows and even Hollywood movies attracting many young drivers to try the technique.

To the spectators, car drifting may look easy to do. But to the real drivers, there are actually a lot of techniques that they need to apply especially in maneuvering the vehicle to achieve the right drifting.

If you’re planning on trying out this technique, be aware first of the things you will need. Of course, your first requirement is to have the right car. It has to be a rear wheel drive with manual transmission. Automatic and front wheel drives may be used, though, but they’re you have to know that they’re harder to control. Don’t forget to bring some spare tires as well. For your practice, choose a wide open space and be sure that you’re allowed to do that there.

Before you begin drifting, check that your engine’s RP is at 4000 to 5000. First practice driving in circles in one open flat space. You can start doing the circles to the right and then to the left going from smaller circles to bigger circles.

Once you’re comfortable with your circles, try to use the handbrake and do spins of 180 degrees. You can use it as you near the corner and pull it but only up to the point when the back of car swings outwards. As you’re accelerating, shift into second gear then press the clutch. Keep steering the wheel to the inside of your turn while at the same time pulling the handbrake. Hit the gas hard right away, release the clutch and steer your car to the slide’s direction keeping in mind to use the throttle to control your angle. When you’ve reached the right angle, you can already release the handbrake to start the drift.

The trick in drifting is to hit hard on the gas pedal instead of the brakesas you’re turning to a corner and then power out. The clutch kick strategy is also effective in maintaining your drift. As you’re already drifting, you may feel your car losing its angle and power so what you should then is to press on the clutch to control the speed of your tires. When you continue to drift and your car is still on, alternately press and release the clutch pedal several times in a fast manner to retain the drifting action of your vehicle. If you’re about to end, release the clutch once more.
